WEANER PRODUCTION CAN RUIN BEEF VALUE CHAIN

Although good prices are currently paid for weaners, should the trend continue, Namibian producers will eventually lose an important value chain where value-added beef can be sold in profitable niche export markets. In a media statement released earlier this week, Beef Value Chain Forum (BVCF) chairman Mecki Schneider said this increases the risk of dependence on a one-way live export market to South African feedlots.

MEATCO PRODUCERS THREATEN TO BREAK AWAY

The Meat Corporation of Namibia (Meatco) was established to serve, promote and coordinate the interests of livestock producers in Namibia, while also striving for the stabilisation of the red meat industry in the national interest. But the parastatal has been hit by a power struggle among producers. This week, three board members, Johnnie Hamman, Clara Bohitile, and Kay Rumpf resigned as directors. That move was, however, just the tip of the iceberg.
FUNDS NEEDED TO FINALISE VIABLE BEEF PRODUCTION SYSTEM

About N$1 million needs to be raised to finalise all outstanding issues to build a viable beef production system for Namibia. A beef value chain forum, with eight steering committee members, was established at Otjiwarongo on 17 November 2020 to assess these outstanding issues. This will lead to a full feasibility study and a bankable business plan to ensure profitable and sustainable value addition in the beef sector, the forum said in a statement in December.
